
Text description of “Implementation Flow Chart for UW–Madison Teaching Workload Reporting”
Description of the requirement:
Need ≥12 credits per academic year through group instruction plus individual instruction plus credit equivalents (≥ 15 credits for 12-month appointment), minus any adjustments due to title[i], leave status or FTE[ii], course buyouts[iii].
Outline description, starting from top of flow chart:
“Group instruction needs of the program must be met first. Chair/dean/director has full authority.”
- If ≥12 credits, then “the requirement is met.”
- If <12 credits, then “Individual instruction needs of the program must be met second. Chair/dean/director has full authority.”
- If now ≥12 credits, then “the requirement is met.”
- If still <12 credits, then “Individual instruction activities of the faculty or staff member should be considered third. Per school/college/department policy.”
[i] Exceptions for dept chairs, extension, clinical health science appointments
[ii] Reductions for approved leave or reduced FTE
[iii] Buyouts to be pre-approved by chair/dean/director. Cannot use general program revenue or tuition dollars for buyouts
[iv] Must advance our instructional mission
[v] Must comply with statutory requirements
[vi] Limited number of exceptions available
[vii] Exceptions initially allocated on a headcount basis
[viii] Exceptions are typically considered as a last resort
